A Victorian court has been told of the grim details about a violent brawl between two gangs that left a teenager dead after suffering a stab wound to the heart.
Mohammad Mohammadi’s was fatally stabbed when the scuffle broke out between an African and Afghan gangs at the Corio Village Shopping Centre in August 2020.
Alith Wal, 20, and Nyal Mainyal, 21, were initially charged with murder over Mr Mohammadi’s death but the charge was dismissed after the pair pleaded guilty to lesser charges of affray and causing injury intentionally.
A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with murder and affray.
Prosecutors alleged in court that the minor stabbed Mr Mohammadi in the right side of the chest, which proved fatal.
Wal and Mainyal appeared in the Supreme Court at Geelong on Tuesday where Crown Prosecutor Ray Gibson aired grim details of the attack.
The court was told two groups approached each other outside the shopping centre after a one-on-one fight was organised via social media.
It is still unknown which party started the brawl but Mr Gibson told the court the accused minor threw a punch.
Prosecutors submitted the fight continued to escalate before the minor allegedly “lunged” at Mr Mohammadi and stabbed him once in the right side of the chest.
He collapsed after trying to walk away from the scuffle.
After Mr Mohammadi’s friends fled the scene the group of African men, including Wal and Mainyal, approached the deceased again and formed a circle around him, before continuing to attack him, Mr Gibson told the court.
One of the accused later disposed of knives in a gutter nearby but it is not clear who, Mr Gibson told the court.
They were arrested in the following days.
Mr Mohammadi spent almost a week on life support before it was switched off days after his 18th birthday after the stab wound to his heart proved fatal.
Wal was also charged with drug possession (MDMA) to which he has pleaded guilty.
Wal and Mainyal will return to court at a later date.
