For the second year running, the budget supermarket's Glen Marnoch Highland Single Malt Whisky took home top marks at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC), a premiere event that promotes outstanding quality in spirits across the globe.

Achieving the coveted Gold medal award, Aldi's own-brand whisky was just one of three of the discounter's spirits that managed to scoop an award at the event.

Priced at just £17.49 for a 70cl bottle, the affordable award winning single malt whisky beat brands costing up to 55% more, such as Peat Chimney Wemyss Malts which retails for £38.74.

The Glen Marnoch Highland Single Malt Whisky is traditionally matured in hand crafted white oak casks for a minimum of three years and has previously bee hailed for its "clean, well defined style" and "refreshingly rich taste."

A range of other Aldi spirits were also up to the challenge, as its Glen Marnoch Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£17.49, 70cl), Glen Marnoch 12 YO Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£21.99, 70cl) and Glen Marnoch Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£17.49, 70cl) all took home the silver award.

This is the exact same accolade that was also attributed to its much pricier competitor, The Glenturret Triple Wood Single Malt Whisky which can retail at up to 65 percent dearer.

This is not the first time that Aldi's own-brand whisky has garnered acclaim, as it recently won a gold medal award at the prestigious International Wine and Spirits Challenge last month.

The prestigious festival also found that Aldi's Haysmith's Rhubarb & Ginger Gin was one of the best in the world by awarding it the highest possible score, which beat out major brand's such as Edinburgh Gin.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: "It is fantastic to see four of our hero whiskies recognised by experts in the industry, with one landing a gold medal two years in a row.

"This competition has shown that we are making world-class whisky on par with premium bottles – for a fraction of the price."
