Bud Grant was a former American football player and coach, who was born on May 20, 1927, in Superior, Wisconsin. He played college football at the University of Minnesota, where he was a three-sport athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball.
After college, Grant was drafted by both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Minneapolis Lakers of the NBA. He chose to play professional football and joined the Eagles in 1950. Grant played for the Eagles for two seasons before being traded to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 1953.
Grant quickly became a star in the CFL, playing both offense and defense as a receiver and defensive end, respectively. He won four Grey Cups with the Blue Bombers and was named an All-Star seven times during his ten-year career in the league.
