A FORMER rugby player delivered his baby daughter one-handed - while on the phone to the midwife.

Derek Edge, 42, had the receiver in one hand and caught baby Charlotte with the other after wife Suzie, 30, went into labour at home five days early.

He said: "It was pretty awesome. A one-handed catch like that on the pitch would have been quite something.

"I was going to say it was not as quick as a rugby ball but the speed of it was like a bullet. It was a special moment and an experience I'll never forget."

Suzie called Derek - an ex-player with Deeside Rugby Club - into action after realising she wasn't going to make it to the hospital.

Chartered accountant Derek, of Banchory, Aberdeenshire, added: "At first I thought, 'Oh, my God, there's no one here to help us'.

"But it all happened so quickly, I just got on with it."

Charlotte, the couple's second girl after Kathryn, one, weighed a healthy 7lb 9oz.

Suzie said: "I'm proud of Derek. He was very calm."
