Early Life

Wilson was born in 1946 in Valdosta on October 13 1946, Georgia, and raised in New York City, where he learned tap and ballet.

He made his Broadway debut at the age of four and performed at Harlem’s Apollo Theater at the age of twelve. Wilson grew up Catholic and worked as an altar boy. Wilson’s grandmother was a Pentecostal, and he briefly considered becoming a Catholic priest.

Wilson’s appendix ruptured when he was thirteen, nearly killing him, but he determined to serve God as an adult in some form.

Wilson served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 and was injured while serving with the 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam.

Wilson landed the role of Lamont Sanford in the NBC sitcom Sanford and Son in 1971 after starring as a robber on All in the Family with Cleavon Little. Johnny Brown was considered for the job, but Wilson was chosen instead because of his commitment to Laugh-In.

Wilson played Lamont throughout the series’ duration and became the show’s star when Redd Foxx left the show in 1974 due to a wage dispute with the producers, and his character was written out for the rest of the season.

Foxx returned the next year, and the two continued together until the show was cancelled in 1977.
Wilson has authored several Christian books about the New Age Movement and the hidden threats he believes it poses to society.

New Age Millennium was published on December 1, 1998, by CAP Publishing & Literary Co. LLC. According to Wilson, the book, previously written for children, is an “exposé” of certain New Age “symbols and slogans.“

Wilson is also a close friend of Clifton Davis and has made multiple guest appearances on the Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Praise The Lord program. He also starred as Lynn’s biological father, a guest performer on the UPN sitcom Girlfriends.

Wilson began appearing in a touring production of Matt Hardwick’s play The Measure of a Man with actress Nina Nicole in the summer of 2011. The drama is billed as “a faith-based production” in a small town in south Georgia.

Wilson began production and acting in a theatrical family picture based on the play Faith Ties in 2010.

The protagonist is a preacher caught amid people’s lives crumbling around him.
