A Chicago man was arrested in the fatal road-rage shooting of a beloved youth baseball coach, who was killed while driving with his son on a Minnesota highway, police said.
Jamal Lindsey Smith, 33, was nabbed in Illinois and expected to be charged with second-degree murder for his involvement in the July 6 shooting of Jay Boughton, Plymouth (Minn.) police announced on Thursday.
Cops plan to extradite Smith to Minnesota, the announcement said.
The announcement didn’t offer further details or say if anyone else was involved in the shooting.
Boughton and his son were driving back from a team game at around 10 p.m. on Highway 169 when someone in an adjacent vehicle shot him – sending the car crashing through a chain link fence, through trees and into parked cars, KSTP reported at the time.
His teen son reportedly gave him CPR until an ambulance arrived. He later died at a hospital, according to cops.
Police had said a “traffic altercation” had broken out between the coach and another driver before the shooting.
Authorities had asked for the public’s help in identifying the other car, sharing snapshots of a light-colored SUV. Plymouth police said Thursday they had recovered the suspect vehicle on July 23, but did not offer details or say where it was found.
Boughton had been an assistant coach for the past three years with the Armstrong Cooper Youth Baseball Association.
“Jay was the kind of guy you wanted to be around,” a message on the association website said, along with a link to a GoFundMe page for the slain coach.
“He was an active member of our baseball family and his love for the game and passion to help the players was second to none. Jay, you were loved by so many and will be deeply missed.”
