Jeannie Mai Jenkins was born in San Jose, California, on January 4, 1979. She has Vietnamese and Chinese ancestors. James Mai, her father, is a Vietnamese immigrant, and Olivia Mai, her mother, is Chinese American. James Jr. and John are Mai’s two older brothers.

Mai was raised in San Jose and graduated from Milpitas High School. She was involved in school activities such as drama, choir, and cheerleading. Mai went to De Anza College after high school to study communications.
