One Direction’s Liam Payne took to Twitter over the weekend to defend his choice to watch Duck Dynasty after UK journalists reportedly “blasted him” for admitting to liking the show, according to TMZ. As we all know, Phil Robertson, the star of DD, came under fire for comments he made in an interview with GQ’s Drew Magary. Some took Robertson’s words to be homophobic, while others defended the star.
Apparently poor Liam is getting roasted for choosing to like a show that promote good family values, according to statements he made on Twitter. “Being a fan of someone’s show and the way they still hold a family together doesnt mean I am okay with all they say,” Liam tweeted on Saturday. That tweet was just one of many made by Payne during his Twitter war with those who bashed him for his taste in television.
Of course, it wasn’t long before reports came out calling Liam homophobic because he said he liked Duck Dynasty. The star at one point even tweeted, “And I know I’m playing into ur hands writing this tweet but I’m sick of stupid stories its time you all grew up.” Liam later tweeted that his posts were meant for “the journalists and bloggers, not the fans.”
Personally, I agree with one of Liam’s later tweets deeming the whole thing as “stupid.” It is stupid. Nothing that Liam said about the show was even remotely homophobic. I also agree with him that a man is entitled to like whatever show he wants, and that just because he likes a show, doesn’t mean he shares the same beliefs as the characters or stars of the shows. I mean, it’s not like all of those who are fans of Dexter are okay with being a serial killer, so why is it that fans of Duck Dynasty are automatically labeled as homophobic? In my opinion, those UK journalists need to give Liam a break.
