She was 8 years old when she started dancing.
Nancy Xu participated in the U21 World Championships and emerged as a finalist in 2010.
She finished 3rd in the 2010-2012 CBDF National Amateur Latin Championships.
She participated in the 2013 International Singapore Championship and concluded her journey as runner-up.
In 2014, Nancy Xu appeared in the Chinese version of the reality television show So You Think You Can Dance and made it to the finals.
She joined the dance company Burn the Floor in the year 2015 and went on to perform around the world.

It was in the 19th installment of Strictly Come Dancing that Nancy Xu finally got to partner for the first time and she was paired up with CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson. The duo topped the leaderboard twice (once with the Charleston and once with the Argentine tango) but were also in the dance-off four times and concluded their journey as they were eliminated in the semi-final, coming 4th in the competition. Other celebrity participants for the season included Rose Ayling-Ellis, John Whaite, AJ Odudu, Dan Walker, Tilly Ramsay, Tom Fletcher, Judi Love, Sara Davies, Adam Peaty, Ugo Monye, Katie McGlynn, Robert Webb, and Greg Wise.
Nancy Xu was partnered with English actor, singer, and model Will Mellor for the 20th series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2022 and they made it to the semi-final, topping the leaderboard three times in the process. They were eventually eliminated and finished 5th in the competition.
In 2023, Nancy Xu was partnered with English television presenter, comedian, and actor Les Dennis for the 21st season of Strictly Come Dancing and they became the first couple to be eliminated as they lost the first dance-off of the series to Nikita Kanda and Gorka Márquez.
