He is the founder of the Ravenel Development Corporation, a commercial real estate company.
In 2004, Thomas Ravenel ran for the U.S. Senate, seeking the seat left open after the retirement of Fritz Hollings. In the Republican primary election, he was placed 3rd and he subsequently endorsed Republican Jim DeMint who then won the Republican runoff and the general election.
He was fined more than $19,000 by the Federal Election Commission for improperly filing the required forms for the election.
In the year 2006, he ran for South Carolina Treasurer and defeated nine-term state treasurer Democrat Grady Patterson in the 2006 general election.
Thomas Ravenel was indicted on federal cocaine distribution charges by US Attorney Reginald Lloyd in June 2007. The charges that were filed against him alleged that he purchased less than 500 grams of cocaine through an intermediary in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2005.
He was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison for drug charges against him on March 4, 2008.
In the 2012 Republican primaries, Thomas Ravenel went on to endorse Ron Paul.
